I published the very first issue of DEEP PURPLE FOREVER in February 1991. Deep Purple had released “Slaves And Masters” in October 1990 and this featured Joe Lynn Turner on vocals. My friend (photographer) Michael Johansson sat down with Yngwie Malmsteen in early January 1991 with a tape recorder (yes, we had them back in the day) and got his impressions of the album, track by track. Of course it was difficult for Yngwie since he had worked with Turner in his own band, so the “nostalgia factor” of the reunion was gone. We used to do things like this, I really treasure those days and I think we created a pretty decent fan club type thing. The cover shot of the first issue of Ritchie Blackmore was taken in Copenhagen back in 1988 (by Mr Johansson) as he entered the stage during the introduction of “Highway Star”. Brilliant picture I have to say. But let us see what Yngwie had to say about “Slaves And Masters”. Enjoy.

KING OF DREAMS – “Pretty interesting intro, but something makes it a bit lame. I think Ian Paice is to blame for this. The other problem I have is that I have been a huge fan for 20 years and at this point I feel negative about the whole thing, before even listening. To me, Deep Purple is MK 2 back in the day. You can not beat “Made In Japan” and “In Rock”. On top of that, I had Joe Lynn Turner in my band so it is hard to be objective. I think it sounds good but it does not feel like it is Deep Purple. They used to be aggressive and there was a pioneer spirit. I see nothing like that now. Joe is singing well on this song but Ritchie is not delivering as he surely could”.

THE CUT RUNS DEEP – “I love the intro to this song! Fucking great. And the riff that Blackmore delivers is one of his best ever, actually. Extremely good. Very nice groove. Joe is singing well but as soon as I hear him it is not Purple anymore. I am not trying to bullshit him, it is just the way it is. Boring lyrics, love and fucking. Musically, this is the best track on the album. Jon is like a God. Paice is like a drum machine, but Jon, what a guy! Best song since the early Rainbow albums for Ritchie. Roger? Well…”.

FIRE IN THE BASEMENT – “I can only comment on this song in one way – fucking shit! Too common, same old boring riffs. Standard stuff, boring. What else have we got?”.

TRUTH HURTS – “Good mid temp song. Had I not known it was Deep Purple, I would have considered it an interesting tune. My kind of song, but it is hard to place it under the Purple banner. Next”.

BREAKFAST IN BED – “This is the one that everybody likes, is it not? Sounds like a “Stormbringer” song. Not sure what to say, it does not attract me much. They kind of drag it out and not much is happening. Pretty boring. And Paice is holding back on every song. He sounds tired. Maybe he was bored? Lord is pretty good. Blackmore? Well the standard he set on “Fireball” is not there is it. But it is still better than what I have heard in recent years. The production is a bit boring. The drums is bringing it down”.

LOVE CONQUERS ALL – “Great beginning with strings. What is this called? “Love Conquers All”? It reminds me of one of my songs, “Dreaming”, right in the beginning. Pretty good, not lyrically though. Next.”.

FORTUNETELLER – “Joe is singing extremely well here, no doubt about that. Good song, good arrangement. Maybe a tad too laidback? It does not feel like Deep Purple, but it is not a bad album. That is how I view it. Next”.

TOO MUCH IS NOT ENOUGH – “Joe wrote this for my “Odyssey” record, but I vetoed it. Too common, you have heard it all before”.

WICKED WAYS – “Now this is Deep Purple! Fucking great! So lets see, the best songs are “The Cut Runs Deep”, “Wicked Ways”, “Fortuneteller” and “Truth Hurts”. It is cool that the old dudes are still at it. A lot of people say they should have quit when they were on top, but that is not easy. If you are a musician or a painter or whatever, you have to do it until you croak. I know I will. To sum up this album, it is OK, nothing more, nothing less. I think “The House Of Blue Light” is the best album that they have produced since the reunion. “Nobody´s Perfect” is a piece of crap, Blackmore is so bad on that”.

And here we are, nearly 30 years later. And Deep Purple and Yngwie Malmsteen are still out there doing what they do best.

I actually missed to give this a nod in January, but here we go. I published DEEP PURPLE FOREVER (issue) 22 in January 1999. The cover shots were taken by Michael Johansson at Solna-hallen in Stockholm on October 3 1998. Several interviews in this one, as was the norm back in the day. The first 200 to pay for this issue got a signed picture of ex-Rainbow singer Doogie (or Dougie) White. I recall printing them, shipping them over to him in the UK and then getting them back.

He did write a few words on these so everybody got something special. I kept one for myself (and framed it) and it says “Tried for three years – Dougie White 99” (yes it was Dougie then, it changed a bit later on). In any case, it was a good period for the DEEP PURPLE FOREVER club and I had a blast doing it.

A glimpse of the past – DEEP PURPLE FOREVER (issues) 20 and 21, published in August and October 1998 by yours truly. My friend Staffan Eriksson had done the drawing of Deep Purple as they celebrated three decades and I liked it a lot. First ever cover that was not printed in full colour, but only because it was not a photograph, and the purple print looks great. Issue 21 sported cover shots by Benny Holmström and Michael Johansson. This was an odd one, I had been sent a school work on the history of Deep Purple by a student (Henrik Engvall) and I decided to print it as it was as a full magazine, only adding the cover and some classic ads from the past. Åke Pettersson over at EMI loved it and bought 50 copies that EMI used to promote the compilation album “30: Very Best of Deep Purple” in Sweden with.

Busy days. Having some fun organizing the old (and new) collection in my new place. On the left: Deep Purple family stuff (Tour Programmes, rare magazines etc). On the right: Reserved for Babymetal only.

The Vinyls are finally handled correctly, easy access being all important (see earlier post). Seen here are fairly new Vinyls. The older stuff is getting organized as we speak (great fun to look them over again). The Soundtracks are finding their way to the TV room.

Speaking of which… Here is a nice little corner that I just put in place. On the wall: Rainbow live, signed by Ronnie James Dio (recently showcased on this blog). Signed Callisto (Xena villain) photograph by actress Hudson Leick. Framed Babymetal “Megitsune” poster from Tower Records (Shinjuku, Japan – has also been highlighted earlier on this blog). Yesterday, at about midnight, I blasted some Judas Priest and Babymetal at high volume (testing the new TV in the process) and went outside to check what the neighbours might hear. Pretty much nothing. Good to know. I also have a nice 1960s Exhibition going. Got to have some fun.

Pretty happy about this particular autograph, signed by Ronnie James Dio in Stockholm back in 2001 (the full interview can be found on this blog). He signed the spread of an issue of UK Fan Club publication MORE BLACK THAN PURPLE and I later had it framed. He was promoting “Magica” at the time, a truly wonderful album. Very pleasant man.

As I move stuff to my new house I might as well showcase some cool memorabilia from the old collection. Got this drum skin with the greeting from (Deep Purple drummer) Ian Paice as a gift from 220 Volt guitarist Mats Karlsson (“Concerto” tour 2000, as he attended a drum clinic that Paice did). I guess Mats mentioned that it was for the Swedish fan club (that part of my magazine publishing ended in 2003).

Young Guitar Magazine in Japan has published a Glenn Hughes Special. 270 pages that covers his career. I guess this is a book rather than a magazine, but a lot of these looks like books over there.

Got to love Japan.
